Twins edge Royals

Series with Indians begins tonight

The Minnesota Twins have had trouble on the road with the defending champion Royals all season long but finally managed to get one in Kauffman Stadium last night, beating the Royals 7-6 after rallying in the ninth inning with a three run hit off of Kelvin Herrera.

“Ideally, I wanted to give Kel another day of rest,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We were just so thin in the bullpen. But Kel takes the ball no matter how he feels. But he’s a bit worn down from the extra workload this year.”

royals-4The Royals have to regroup quickly as they welcome the Cleveland Indians to Kauffman Stadium for a three game stand, and the final series of the season between the two teams, kicking off tonight at 7:15.

The Royals will send out RHP Yordano Ventura (11-11, 4.40 ERA) to the mound to start the game while the Indians’ Ryan Merritt will will get his first start in the majors after 24 starts with Triple-A Columbus.

“It’s a good experience for them going into next year,” Cleveland pitching coach Mickey Callaway said of using younger arms down the stretch. “Coming into Spring Training, they’ve pitched against the best hitters in the game and are getting that experience. And there’s some pressure to it, especially for them. … They’re fighting for their jobs and lives. ┬áThat’s how it is for young guys. It’s good that they’re facing a lineup that’s trying to beat them up.”
